High Carbon Silicon Si40C18

High carbon silicon is a single addition doing the work of two or three. It brings silicon and carbon into the ladle together, so a mill can drop part of its FeSi, its carburiser and even its silicon carbide and replace the lot with one material. Si40C18 is the leanest of our three grades and the cheapest per tonne of silicon.

Usual practice is 3 to 8 kg per tonne of steel, added near the end of the blow or with the tapping stream. It suits plain carbon and low alloy grades such as Q195, Q235 and the HRB335 / HRB400 rebar family, and it has been through an extended trial on a 1# AOD converter as well. Recovery on both silicon and carbon runs above 95 percent, so most of what you pay for ends up in the steel.

Natural lumps, or processed to 10-100 mm and 10-50 mm; finer cuts such as 0-5 mm and 1-10 mm can be made to order. Packing is one tonne jumbo bags unless you ask for something else.

Can it replace silicon carbide as well as FeSi? Many mills use it that way, though the exact split depends on your charge balance.

What size suits a converter? 10-50 mm or 10-100 mm is the usual answer.
