High Carbon Si-C Alloy Si50C15

High carbon silicon, or Si-C alloy, is made from high purity carbon powder, silicon carbide powder, silicon powder and a low sulphur carbon carrier, processed and formed rather than smelted down like ferro silicon. Si50C15 is the middle of our three common marks.

It does two jobs at once in the melt: it deoxidises and it carburises, so a converter can drop part of its ferro silicon and its carburiser at the same time.

Take the sample and the temperature before the tap, then dose during tapping with the steel stream, or straight into the furnace if your practice allows it. Around 3 to 8 kg per ton of steel is where most converters land, later in the blow rather than early. Finish the deoxidation after, and keep the endpoint oxygen under 400 ppm before you commit the final alloys.

For a converter we would start you on 10-50 mm. Blocky lumps in a cold bin are also the reason people complain about bridging, so keep the bags dry and ventilated.

One rolling mill told us they stopped buying carburiser as a separate line item after a month on this material, and their silicon recovery held above 95% through the trial. We keep that kind of feedback because it changes how we size the next lot.

Ball shape or lump? Both. We pressed balls for an AOD trial and they ran fine, but lump is cheaper to make so we usually quote lump first.

Can it replace our silicon carbide? On carbon and silicon yes, and it brings deoxidation with it. Ask for a trial load before you change the recipe.
